Park Educational Programs
Youth Sculpture Mentorship Program
The San Juan Islands Sculpture Park is proud to introduce an exciting new initiative that deepens its mission of art education and community engagement while nurturing the next generation of sculptors. Established as a space where visitors can enjoy outdoor art in a natural setting, and where artists are both celebrated and supported, the Sculpture Park now welcomes a bold
addition to its programming: the Youth Sculpture Mentorship Program.
Designed by local bronze artist Kristen Douglas-Seitz, who also serves on the Park’s Board of Advisors, this immersive six-month mentorship invites young artists to explore the full creative journey from clay modeling to bronze casting. Through hands-on instruction, individualized critiques, and engagement with the craft’s technical and expressive processes, participants will
gain professional-level experience in sculpture. At the culmination of the program, each student’s bronze work will be installed permanently in the Park, adding new, meaningful voices to the Park’s diverse collection.“We are thrilled to expand our educational offerings through this mentorship,” said the Sculpture Park board. “Kristen’s expertise as a working bronze artist, coupled with her dedication to mentorship, exemplifies the Park’s commitment to fostering artistic growth in our community.”
The Youth Sculpture Mentorship Program reflects the Park’s long-standing dedication to art education, artistic development, and the enhancement of cultural life on San Juan Island. Visitors to the Park, home to more than 150 sculptures from emerging and established artists, will now witness not only masterpieces of the present but the promising work of tomorrow’s creators.
